GCF 2024: The Value that Cash brings to Society

2 Dec 2025

Reflecting on GCF 2024 and looking ahead to the innovations shaping cash in 2026.

As momentum builds toward the Global Currency Forum in April 2026, we’re reminded of the incredible event held in 2024.

The Global Currency Forum (GCF) 2024 brought together influential central bankers, senior finance officials, and leaders from across the currency sector for an unforgettable three-day event in Oman. With 434 registered attendees, including 121 representatives from 60 Central Banks and State Print Works, the forum proved to be a vital platform for collaboration, learning, and shaping the future of cash.

A Forum of Global Influence

With plenty of sessions and workshops, attendees engaged in unique discussion topics, led by expert speakers and enriched by 34 technology workshops hosted by GCF partners. These sessions offered deep dives into emerging technologies, policy challenges, and the evolving role of cash in society.

Unpacking the Forum’s Theme

Each day focused on a distinct aspect of cash’s role in society:

Day 1: The Social Value of Cash

We kicked things off with inspiring welcome speeches and a keynote from Tom Fletcher CMG, who brought a fresh perspective on global stability and the role cash plays in it. Sessions on National Identity in Banknote Design and Financial Literacy reminded us how deeply cash is woven into our cultures and communities.

Day 2: The Current Challenges for Cash

From sustainability pressures to legislative efforts to protect cash, Day 2 was all about addressing some of the most pressing issues facing cash. We explored how collaboration needs to evolve and why cash still matters in a digital-first world.

Day 3: Shaping Cash for the Future

The final day included sessions on Artificial Intelligence, Gen Z’s relationship with cash, and global payment resilience. These forward-thinking discussions helped attendees consider how to adapt and innovate in response to emerging challenges.
